We begin this week’s “RUFF TAILS” featuring a beautiful 14-week-old Cockapoo named Tucker.

Tucker’s personality is a mixed bag. Tucker can be full of energy, extremely playful and vocal with his cute puppy high pitch barks. After a good 30 minutes of play and excitement he’ll be sprawled out on the floor in borderline slumber.

Tucker has been a great addition to our family, even Elvis, our 15-year-old Shih-poo is starting to warm up to him LOL. Looking forward to the years to come as we grow together.

To be an effective trainer, it would be essential to be an excellent behaviouralist. To be successful you must be able to read and understand all dogs.

Each session presents, based on the K9’s assessment, varied resolution techniques. Yes, there is more than one way to resolve a behaviour. I have an open mind philosophy and will use any tool or technique if I am shown the positive results.

I have added many tools to my training kit and am always open to new innovations, therefore continuously learning and creating a balanced approach.

Every dog is unique in the DNA, breed, drive and personality. A training technique or tool may work on one, but not always on another.

It is important to treat each client as a blank canvas. Then we can start to paint a beautiful path of obtaining advanced obedience and behaviour.

I encourage all clients to do their due diligence and research to ensure they retain a professional dog trainer to improve their K9 problem behaviours.

Remember every day is a training day.

Welcome to Doggie Dialogue

Many owners and their children love teaching their K9 fun tricks. It is relatively easy to teach your dog to shake a paw, play dead, take a bow, spin and roll over. These tricks are great for providing mental stimulation for your dog.

The best way to try to get your K9 to roll over is by using a treat, and then lure your dog into a roll, and gradually increasing the amount they roll until they completely roll over.

Teaching your K9 to play dead is similar, by luring your K9 to lay down and stay down.

The best way to teach your K9 to “shake a paw” is to start by holding out your hand for your dog to paw at. When they paw at your hand, praise them, and give them a treat. Gradually they will learn to associate pawing with the “shake” command.

Take a bow can be more of a challenge. Lure your K9 into a low, forward position by holding a treat in front of their nose. As they lower their chest, reward them with the treat.

When teaching your K9 to spin, lure your K9 into a spin by moving the treat in a circular motion around them. As they start to spin, praise them, and give them a treat.

Teaching your K9 these fun tricks, your dog will love them and so will the children who teach them how!!!!
