We begin this week with “K9 Corner with the Chief”.

Quality training equipment is essential for positive results of advanced K9 behaviour modification. Your canine’s safety relies solely on your investment of the quality of your products purchased.

Over my years I have seen many product failures with owners, which can result in K9 and human injuries, specifically in the E-collar industry. The most common error owners experience is buying ineffective systems that are low in cost.

It is essential to ensure that your e-collar system is suited for your dog’s size, weight, and personality. Purchasing the wrong system can be frustrating for the owners as the system does not provide the desired results and/or effective messaging.

With a low-quality e-collar system, dog owners may over stimulate their dogs and fall into the trap using the terms of “shocking” or “zapping” their canines. These errors can lead you down the wrong path preventing positive training and results.

I have also seen too many poor leashes and training collars break. This can be a result of poor-quality material.

We recommend our reputable equipment supplier, K-9 Dynamics, as they have the best products available on the market.

Having this supplier available to all our corporate and private clients, we ensure that these quality products are utilized properly, therefore giving you the results that you desire.

Should you need any assistance, please feel free to reach out to Paul at any time.

Canines that have short hair or hairless like Chihuahuas, Greyhounds, Chinese Cresteds, Whippets, Yorkshire Terriers, and Boston Terriers all need winter protection.

Short-legged breeds like Dachshunds, Corgi and Pugs whose bellies are close to the ground will need winter protection as well.

Small or Toy dogs cannot maintain their body temperature in cold weather. We recommend appropriate outerwear for small or toy dogs.

Every K9 is an individual. Many breeds may benefit from wearing a coat for different reasons. Older K9’s or K9’s with health conditions may struggle to stay comfortable in the cold.

Breeds that have single-layer coats such as Shih Tzu, Poodles, or Cockapoo need protection from the winter’s months as well.

Other breeds who would benefit from winter protection would be Great Danes, because of their short hair and have little “insulation.”

ree

Beagles historically used to warmth, are sensitive to the cold.

ree

Both Boxers and Doberman have short coats and make them vulnerable to the cold.

There are breeds that have difficulty breathing in the cold such as the Brachycephalic breeds Pugs, Bulldogs, and Maltese. Dogs that have asthma should be closely monitored during the cold winter months. Please speak to your vet regarding your K9’s needs during the winter months, if needed.
