We begin this week’s “RUFF TAILS” featuring a beautiful 15-week-old Miniature Bernedoodle named Ella.

Ella should be 25-30 lbs. when full grown. She is very smart, lovable, mischievous, with a little bit of attitude.

She loves being outside, meeting people, and having her belly rubbed. We truly lucked out with her.

Fleas and ticks usually end up on our pets while outside the home, either on a walk, and even playing in the backyard.

Therefore, sometimes ending up in the house. To help prevent this you can “treat” your yard by using natural products with essential oils and/or non-toxic ingredients that can be sprayed in your yard to prevent fleas and ticks from breeding near your house.

It is important to talk to your veterinarian before using essential oils in your home or around your house as some essential oils are toxic to both cats and dogs.

We recommend removing leaf litter and debris within 6-18 inches from your house. This is where fleas and ticks love to breed.

Remember to mow your lawn so your grass isn’t too long, as ticks and fleas prefer to breed in tall grass. Ants and spiders are natural enemies to fleas therefore do not cut your grass too short as it will repel the ants and spiders.

Fleas do not like cedar mulch, therefore using mulch in your gardens and around your home acts as a natural barrier.

Fleas and ticks prefer dark, damp areas, therefore prune thick shrubs and dead limbs to allow sunlight to permeate your yard.

Food-grade diatomaceous earth can be applied to your dog’s environment to quickly kill fleas.

When using these products in your house, for example around your windows, baseboards, carpets, dog beds, and doors, it is recommended that you vacuum “treated” areas after a few hours to remove dead fleas. Please check with your veterinarian to see if this is the right product for your pets.
