Caissie Canine Instruction: The Importance of K9 Fecal Analysis

Writer: caissiecanineinstrcaissiecanineinstr

We begin the week’s “RUFF TAILS” featuring a beautiful 15-month-old German Shepherd named Jagger.

Mr. Paul is working with me to help me grow into a responsible boy. I need help with my manners and reactivity. I am a little nervous around cars and other dogs.

My mom thinks I am insecure and stubborn. I think I just need a little more time to learn what’s expected of me. I know I’ll get there eventually. Thanks for meeting me. Jagger.

A fecal exam is important for all K9’s. This exam will help identify and treat parasites and other health concerns.

Fecal analysis helps to identify parasites like worms and giardia. The analysis can also check for salmonella and viruses like parvovirus.

Most vets will do a fecal exam as part of your K9’s annual wellness exam. Your vet will recommend this as part of your K9’s parasite prevention plan.

Some clinics will recommend fecal testing for adult dogs every six months, especially for K9’s that spend a lot of time outside.

Fecal testing is one of the most common diagnostic tests run when your K9 has diarrhea.

The common type of fecal tests for dogs includes “fecal floatation” where your veterinarian team will take a fecal sample and check for parasite eggs.

A “snap test” can be done at your vet’s office to test for infections, such as parvovirus and giardia.

Other fecal tests, such as a culture are less common and are usually performed at a reference laboratory. The cost for this type of testing ranges from $25.00-$75.00 for each test.

To prepare for a fecal test for your K9, the veterinary team will recommend bringing in a fecal sample to the clinic.

If your K9 has diarrhea you can scoop up the feces into a container or poop bag. Some clinics may send you home with a particular container to collect the sample.

The results for a “snap test” take around 8 minutes and the results are quick. With the “floatation test” it takes approximately 20 minutes.
